(Part Two of Finding the Best Savannah Ghost Tours While in Savannah)
Savannah Ghost Stories I was a ghost tour guide in haunted Savannah back in 1983– sharing Savannah haunted history and Savannah Ghost Stories while working for one of the Historic Savannah Carriage Tour companies. I tell Savannah Ghost Stories -- not from a script (look out for that) but from all the material on ghosts and hauntings in Savannah I've learned on my own and through colleagues– off the clock. I spent (and still do) hours and hours researching Savannah history, Savannah Ghost Stories and haunted history. So do a handful of other walking Savannah ghost tour guides in Savannah. Paranormal and Supernatural Savannah I study paranormal theories about ghosts, West African, Irish, Native American, and German supernatural folklore and lots of time exploring and investigating haunted locations in Savannah. I also love really well told Ghost Stories -- historically true or not. Especially Savannah Ghost Stories. However, an honest ghost tour guide in Savannah will tell you which parts of their Savannah Ghost stories have well documented Savannah history and which parts fall into the Savannah ghost Stories. Types of Savannah Walking Ghost Tours and Guides Savannah is loaded with ghost walking tour guides and, in terms of quality, Savannah ghost walking tour guides cover the spectrum. A few are fantastic – many are not -- not yet anyway. Some are good and some may be simply looking for extra income derived from conducting walking Savannah ghost tours. They may or may not be doing any research into Savannah hauntings on their own other than reading the Savannah ghost books that started coming out in the 1980’s and/or through material given to them by their Savannah ghost tour companies and other Savannah ghost tour guides. Other Savannah walking ghost tour guides enjoy the creepy factor of their subject and enjoy creeping out their ghost tour guests. Nothing wrong with that as long as that is all you are looking for. Other walking Savannah ghost tour guides genuinely love their subject, may even do their own research into Savannah hauntings, but their delivery may suffer for various reasons. Ghost Tour Websites, Trip Adviser and other Ghost tour Review Sites The old adage "don't judge a book by its cover" is never more true than in the Savannah ghost tour industry. Reading how great the guide is on the same website that is selling the guide's services is not exactly a great way to get an accurate idea of whether the guide is a good match for you. Although it could help, believe me. So don't overlook it. Conversely, despite the commercial, non-objective nature of many review sites, they are still a great resource to learn more about possible Savannah tour guides. Taken as a whole, most reviews will give you a fairly accurate idea about how your guide is experienced by the guests on their tours. Just make sure to read them all. The Delivery Delivering Savannah Ghost Stories, haunted history and Savannah paranormal evidence in a manner that reaches deep into people on Savannah walking ghost tours is a true art is that is usually learned over years to master. But if the way that haunted Savannah material is delivered on walking Savannah ghost tours is not important to you then you’ve just answered another question about finding the right walking ghost tour guide in Savannah. I hope this helps you to think about what you are looking for in both Savannah Ghost tours and what kind of guide sounds intersting to you. This updated article was originally written for Visit Savannah's Savannah Secrets in 2014. Since then Savannah has added even more ghost tours to an already crowded tourist scene downtown. But that's what make's this article on how to select the best Savannah Ghost Tours is even more timely to ponder when deciding which of the many different Savannah ghost tours to take. This updated series on Ghost tours in Savannah is intended to help visitors to Savannah find authentic Savannah Ghost tours and, of course, to find some of Savannah's best ghost tours.
If its your first time on Savannah ghost tours, or even your tenth, its sometimes good to just stretch yourself, throw caution to the wind, and enjoy whatever happens. After all, you’re on vacation, right? Why should you have to think too hard about what ghost tours in Savannah to go on? Time is a precious commodity and there are lots of options to choose from: some ghost tours in Savannah explore Savannah’s haunted history. Other ghost tours focus on Savannah ghost stories. Some offer paranormal “evidence.” others delve more deeply into Savannah's Low Country Voodoo and Hoodoo traditions. Some of the best Savannah ghost tours offer most or all of the above and even a variety of tours to choose from. “Which tour and guide is best for me, my friends, my family” you may ask? Good question — because when it comes to the best ghost tours in Savannah, Georgia – one size does not fit all – no matter how many different tour offerings an individual company has. Start by asking yourself this very important question: “What am I looking for in a ghost tour?” Equally important — “what kind of tour guide am I looking for?” “Do I know?” “Does it matter?” If you haven’t decided before you get to Savannah – “no problem,” you say. “I’ll just decide after I get there.” Finding the Best Savannah Ghost Tour Guide Savannah has a handful of great ghost tour guides and a collection of good ones. But they don’t all work for the same company. Go with several Ghost tour companies If you have the time while you visit Savannah. I personally know and recommend some of the Guides working for my colleague “competitors.” Some of the Savannah tour guides I recommend are the actual owners of these companies and several of them have written engaging, well researched books on paranormal. I can’t speak for any one of them, of course, or any of the hotel concierges in Savannah but if you contact me and I feel you are seeking a different kind of tour than our own Savannah Ghost Walks then I’ll recommend someone else. No one else will do that and they would laugh at me for driving business away but Your experience in Savannah is most important to me -- above everything else. Pub Crawls Then there are haunted pub crawls in Savannah which, as the name implies, go in and out of Savannah’s haunted pubs – most of them emphasize drinking first and ghost stories second. But there are a few really good haunted pub tour guides who also rank near the top of the list for Savannah’s best ghost tour guides. Just depends on whether you’re interested in drinking at each stop! No one’s judging. In Part Two we’ll explore how to find the best possible Savannah ghost tour guide. I’m dead serious. |
